Our Story…
When you have a 3 month old baby who refuses to sleep through the night, a lively 6 year old, a football crazy 9 year old, you are self employed travelling across Scotland delivering training programmes and managing an inspection team for SQA it makes complete sense to start a childcare business!!!!
SO it was, in early 2011 during a mum and baby group, that Suzie shared her crazy idea with her friend Dawn that she was thinking of setting up an afterschool childcare service in Balerno. Dawn and Suzie had known each other since first meeting when Dawn was a 13 year old in the youth group at St Mungos ……..and Suzie was her youth leader!
The catalyst for Suzie’s developing idea was the threatened closure of the local afterschool childcare provision and her own need of childcare to enable her to continue in her self employed role.
As Suzie shared her ideas excitedly with Dawn she then mused out loud, “Im not sure who I would get to work for me or how to go about getting staff.”
”I’d work for you!” said Dawn…….and our fate was sealed from that point on.
Kids Insight opened its doors in August 2012 with the sum total of 5 children.
This was the result of 12 months of behind the scenes hard work. Setting up a regulated childcare service required jumping over various legal and practical hurdles required when undertaking such a venture. If Suzie knew then what she knows now about the huge amounts of work and financial cost it would entail, and the ups and downs of the Kids Insight journey, including forced closure during the pandemic…….it is possible Kids Insight would never have started……….
Suzie and her two sons the day before launching Kids Insight in August 2012. Both attended Kids Insight as part of the first 5 children on our books!
Suzie’s two sons heading off to do a school collection for Kids Insight in May 2025 - working as part of a team collecting 40 children from Dean Park Primary School to take to our Balerno Bowling Club venue. Thirteen years on and they both tower above their mother!
